APD Introduces Newest K-9
ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Police Department will hold an official introduction of its newest K-9 to the public on Monday, May 22, 2017, at 9 a.m. in front of the HEB Grocery store located at 1345 Barrow St. Tica is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois. She was purchased through a community grant of $10,800 by our community partners at the HEB store in Abilene.
The Abilene Police Department wants to thank HEB for partnering with, not only the Police Department, but with the community to make this K-9 available to the citizens of Abilene. Tica was purchased in February, 2017 and is Shutzhund titled. She completed six weeks of intense training and was put into service with her handler, Officer Josh New, in early April. Tica will serve as a dual purpose K-9 in Patrol, including tracking and bite work, and narcotics. She received her United States Police Canine Assoc. and National Police Canine Assoc. certifications after her arrival to Abilene and also took 3rd place in Patrol Region 25 Certifications.
In the 7 weeks since Tica began service she and Officer New have been responsible for 28 arrests, apprehension of a burglar, 2 pistols, 1 rifle and a variety of narcotics being taking of the streets of Abilene.
The addition of Tica will bring the K-9 unit up to 3 of 4 authorized K-9 teams for Patrol and one K-9 team in the Special Operation Division.
