Scoop the Poop!

Post Date:08/22/2017 11:36 AM

We all love our pets but no one wants to see pet waste where they walk or play. Did you know that in addition to being a nuisance, pet waste is also a significant pollutant for stormwater runoff? Pet waste consists of harmful bacteria and when left on sidewalks, streets, and lawns, it is easily washed into the nearest waterway without treatment.

As pet owners, it is our responsibility to pick up after our pets.  Here are some recommended Doo’s and Don’ts to make man’s best friend our waterways’ best friend too:

Doo’s:

  • Pick up after your pets and use pet waste stations where available
  • Always bring a plastic bag with you when you walk your dog
  • Place the bag in the trash or flush the un-bagged waste down the toilet

Don’ts:

  • Don’t forget to scoop the poop in your own yard! (Especially before it rains)
  • Don’t let your pet take care of business on the pavement – choose a grassy area instead.
  • Don’t use pet waste as a fertilizer.  The bacteria in pet waste does far more harm than good.

Stormwater Services together with the Parks Department have installed 15 new pet waste stations within our parks throughout the city: Gill Park, Everman Park, Nelson Park, Redbud Park, Rose Park, Scarborough Park, Sears Park, and Vaughn Camp Park. Take advantage of the stations while walking your dogs in these areas. Do your part and help save our waterways!
